When we think about increasing efficiency in vehicles, we often think smaller engines with less cylinders, and even hybrid or all-electric models. However, the transmission in your vehicle has a hand in increasing fuel efficiency and Honda has a patent on an 11-speed transmission that should be a real game changer.
Hoping to put the competition to shame, this 11-speed transmission also uses three clutches; this means, to put it simply, that it will both increase the fuel efficiency of the vehicle as well as reduce the time it takes to change gears. This is all in the patent phase currently, so it's not clear if this will be used on vehicles like the Fit to further increase their eco-friendliness or on something larger like the Pilot to make the SUV even more appealing to family drivers. Only time will tell.
