There are a lot of hybrid vehicles on the road these days but their engines rely on the use of rare-earth metals. Unfortunately, the price of rare-earth metals is expected to rise by 14% every year, so Honda knew they had to stop trying on them. Recently, they announced that an upcoming hybrid vehicle will use a different material entirely.
The material is called neodymium and is much more affordable as well as much lighter, which means a lighter engine for better fuel efficiency! This new material will be used in the upcoming hybrid minivan called the Honda Freed, which is slated to be released in Japan later this year. No word yet on a western release but we'll keep you posted with more details here on the blog.
